2 Killed in DUI Crash in Lexington County

DrunkCrash

Drinking and driving is illegal and unsafe but, sadly, many people do it anyway. Unfortunately, people end up seriously injured, or even killed. in the resulting accidents.

Two women were recently killed in an accident caused by a suspected drunk driver. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of May 18 at the intersection of Neely Wingard and Ben Franklin roads.

A Jeep Laredo operated by a suspected drunk driver crashed into a Chevrolet Malibu that was heading south on Neely Wingard Road, causing fatal injuries to the Malibu’s two passengers.

Both drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspected drunk driver is facing two felony DUI charges in connection with the crash. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and, like all defendants, the suspected drunk driver is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Together with the families, advocacy groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are calling for stricter action against impaired drivers.

While it is legal for those over the age of 21 to drink alcohol, it is important to be mindful of others and have a plan in place. Plan to call an Uber or Lyft, or have a sober friend drive you home.   Bars and restaurants may also “over-serve” their patrons and bear responsibility under South Carolina’s laws.

Alcohol’s Effect on the Body

Too much alcohol can cause damage to the body such as:

  • Brain and nervous system. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, slowing down brain activity. It impairs judgment, coordination, reflexes, and decision-making. High levels can lead to confusion, blackouts, or unconsciousness.
  • The liver metabolizes alcohol, but it can only process about one standard drink per hour. Excessive consumption over time can lead to fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver failure.
  • In small amounts, alcohol might have some cardiovascular benefits, but heavy use increases the risk of high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and cardiomyopathy.
  • Stomach and digestive system. Alcohol irritates the stomach lining, potentially causing nausea, vomiting, ulcers, or gastritis. It also affects nutrient absorption in the intestines.
