Car accidents are an everyday occurrence and while many are minor, a large number end up tragically being fatal.

Sadly, this was the case in Spartanburg County. Three high school students were killed in a multi-vehicle crash. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of April 22nd when a  tractor-trailer collided with a pick-up truck.

There were three teens inside the truck. Tragically, two of the children died at the accident scene and the third child was taken to the hospital where they later died.

A third vehicle, a Chevrolet coupe, was also involved in the accident and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Fatal Car Accidents Among Teens

Fatal car accidents involving teenage drivers are a serious issue. While inexperience can be a factor, teenagers are not always to blame. Sometimes another driver or other factor is to blame. Still, teens may be less familiar with handling unexpected situations like sudden stops, bad weather, or distracted drivers.

Distracted driving is the top cause of car accidents among teens. Texting, talking on the phone, or having multiple passengers greatly increases crash risk. Speeding and reckless driving are also common contributors to car accidents. Teens are more likely to drive too fast for road or weather conditions.

Low seatbelt use is also common among teens. While wearing a seatbelt does not make accidents less likely to occur, it does make crashes more deadly.

Driving at night can be especially dangerous for teens due to lower visibility and higher fatigue.

Here are some tips to help reduce fatal teen car accidents:

  • Limit nighttime driving. Most teen crashes happen at night, so set a curfew for driving.
  • Restrict passengers: Passengers increase distractions and can increase the chance of risky behavior.
  • Ban phone use. There should be no texting, calling, or even hands-free talking. Phones should stay out of reach while driving.
  • Avoid speeding. Stress the importance of obeying speed limits and adjusting speed for weather or traffic conditions.
