Fatal holiday weekend crash results in tragedy

Holiday weekends can be dangerous for drivers. People are intoxicated and driving recklessly. Accidents are common.
Tragically, one person was killed and three others were injured in a Memorial Day crash on Monticello Road in Columbia. The collision occurred on the afternoon of May 26 roughly six miles north of Columbia.
The crash involved a pickup truck and a sedan. Investigators say the sedan was heading south when it veered off the right side of the road and then re-entered the roadway. It was then hit on the passenger side by the northbound pickup truck.
The driver of the sedan sadly died at the accident scene. Their identity has not been released by the coroner’s office. The driver of the pickup truck as well as two passengers in the sedan were taken to the hospital.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash. Both lanes of traffic were closed for several hours during the response and investigation.
Holidays and Car Accidents
For many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and it consistently sees one of the highest travel volumes of the year. According to AAA, more than 40 million Americans typically travel over the long weekend, with most opting for road trips. This congestion leads to a greater likelihood of accidents.
Holiday weekends often mean barbecues, parties, and large gatherings, which may often involve alcohol. Impaired driving drastically slows reaction time, impairs judgment, and increases the likelihood of high-speed, head-on, or single-vehicle crashes. Driving at night, or through rural or recreational areas without clear signage or lighting, can make conditions even more dangerous.
In fact, Memorial Day weekend regularly ranks as one of the top three deadliest holiday weekends in the United States, with Independence Day and Labor Day also on the list. On average, there are 350 to 400 fatalities as well as thousands of serious injuries over the course of the three-day weekend.
