Rehab Facility Facing Multiple Complaints

NursingHomeNeglect

We want the best care possible for our aging loved ones, but good care is hard to find. Many nursing homes and care facilities have complaints against them for abuse and neglect.

Newly released state records reveal a series of complaints over several years against a rehabilitation facility in North Charleston, South Carolina. Allegations against the facility involve various types of neglect. There are claims of residents left in unsanitary conditions, infestations of insects, unanswered call bells, and ongoing understaffing. Many cases against the facility have been settled, while others were dismissed or remain pending.

In one instance, when dementia and mobility issues made it difficult for a woman to care for her mother, she put her in the facility. However, the woman says the facility treated her mother poorly in her final months. She was allegedly left in urine-soaked clothes, falling and suffering injuries, and feeling ignored.

State inspection reports describe dirty walls and floors, lack of clean linens and towels, bugs crawling, loud noise, and inadequate food handling. One report said a resident fell and lay bleeding on the floor; another said a wheelchair without footrests caused an open sore. There was also a complaint involving a death that was described as likely due to neglect.

The facility was repeatedly cited for issues with cleanliness, staffing, medication administration, pest control, and food preparation. Each citation was followed by a plan for correction.

The facility responded, saying it is committed to providing quality care, take complaints seriously, and view the complaint process as a tool for improvement. The facility also claimed not to have records matching some of the family’s specific concerns (such as hygiene issues or unanswered call bells), and note that federal regulations limit what they can share about individual resident care.

The woman’s daughter is upset about the care her mother received at the end of her life. The daughter wanted to move her mother from the facility, but asserts that insurance requirements made such a change impossible.  She sincerely wished for her mother to have appropriate treatment and was devastated that she was not able to give her the care that she needed and deserved.

The daughter is now hoping to spark change. She hopes voicing her concerns will bring about justice for her deceased mother.

Advocacy experts say that many problems in nursing homes stem from inadequate staffing, leading to poor care and harm to residents. For-profit homes tend to focus on making money, and unfortunately, things have gotten worse since the COVID pandemic.
