SC Caregivers Arrested After Neglect Leads to Death

Nursing home abuse and neglect is rampant in South Carolina. A recent case proves this point.
Two North Charleston caregivers have been arrested following a state investigation that found their alleged neglect led to the death of a vulnerable adult at a local care facility they operated.
The couple, a 58-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man, were taken into custody after a joint investigation by the Attorney General’s Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit (VAMPF), the Charleston County Coroner’s Office, and the North Charleston Police Department.
State investigators were alerted after the coroner’s office identified suspicious circumstances surrounding a resident’s death at a care facility in North Charleston. Tragically, the authorities later determined that prolonged neglect contributed directly to the resident’s death.
The resident, a 64-year-old man, died from a combination of severe medical conditions, including septic shock, bronchopneumonia, and dehydration. Officials reported that these complications were linked to multiple advanced pressure ulcers and underlying infection, all of which were attributed to a lack of proper medical care. The coroner ultimately ruled the manner of death as a homicide due to medical neglect.
During a search of the facility, investigators uncovered additional concerning conditions. Two other vulnerable adults were allegedly found confined in a room without a means of exiting the building. Authorities stated that the environment at the facility posed a significant risk of both physical and mental harm.
In response, multiple state agencies, including public health and social services officials, coordinated efforts to remove the remaining residents and ensure their safety.
The arrest warrants allege that the caregivers failed to provide the basic care, services, and supervision necessary to protect residents’ health and well-being. They now face several serious charges, including abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult resulting in death, multiple counts of neglect, and kidnapping related to the alleged confinement of residents. Both individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Authorities say the case highlights the legal duty caregivers have to provide adequate care and protect the health and safety of residents. Investigators emphasized that failing to meet those obligations can lead to severe criminal consequences.
The case remains under investigation, and officials have not ruled out further charges as more information emerges.
