Woman Facing Multiple Charges for Allowing Men to Abuse Daughters

Legal_Lawyer

Money is a huge motivator for a lot of people. People would do a lot of things for the right price, even when morality and the harm of others is involved.

A South Carolina woman is facing criminal charges after allowing men to sexually abuse her daughters in exchange for money and drugs. The woman, from Berkeley County, was arrested after her daughters contacted law enforcement with shocking claims about the abuse they endured.

On August 3, a deputy was called to the woman’s residence after her daughters reported a sexual assault. The two girls, whose ages are unknown but are described as juveniles, told law enforcement that they were subjected to sexual assaults by multiple men on several occasions. The girls did not know the men.

The daughters told police that their mother “knowingly allowed” the men to sexually assault them in exchange for illegal narcotics and money. The younger girl told police she witnessed her sister being assaulted while their mother was on the floor scrolling through TikTok.

The children also faced squalor. They told police that the house was dirty, with dirty dishes in the sink and never washed. There was no water in the home, so the children had to urinate and defecate in a bucket. They also could not brush their teeth.

The girls’ mother has been charged with two counts of unlawfully placing a child at risk and two counts of trafficking. The woman was booked into custody at Berkeley County Detention Center on August 14. She was still there as of August 19. Her bond has been set at $250,000.

Mothers as Perpetrators and Bystanders of Child Sexual Abuse

While sexual abuse is often seen as something perpetrated primarily by men, women, especially mothers, are sometimes involved in child sexual abuse. Society tends to view mothers as protective caregivers but the truth is that mothers may directly participate in abuse, facilitate it, ignore warning signs, or fail to protect a child.

Social stereotypes about women and motherhood can make it more difficult for victims, professionals, and the public to recognize women as possible perpetrators. Factors that may contribute to a mother’s failure to protect a child include:

  • Dependence on the abusive partner.
  • Fear of violence or retaliation.
  • Psychological trauma or prior victimization.
  • Denial or disbelief that abuse occurred.
  • Emotional dependence and loyalty toward the perpetrator.
  • Mental health or substance-related problems.
  • Social isolation and limited support.
