New Driving Simulator Helps Spinal Cord Injury Patients Regain Independence

Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal injury can be debilitating, making it hard to do daily tasks. For those who fear not being able to drive anymore, there is a tool that can help.

A new driving simulator at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore is giving people with spinal cord injuries an opportunity to practice driving skills in a safe, controlled environment as they work toward returning to the road.

The International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at Kennedy Krieger received a grant from the Samuel and Margaret Gorn Foundation to purchase the simulator. The technology will be incorporated into patient therapy to help individuals develop driving-related skills and build confidence before getting behind the wheel again. Kennedy Krieger expects the simulator to support rehabilitation for approximately 100 patients each year who are 16 and older and have spinal cord injuries or related conditions.

For people who have sustained spinal cord injuries, returning to driving can require specialized rehabilitation and adaptive equipment. Access to driver rehabilitation programs may also be limited, creating delays for people who want to regain their independence.

The ability to drive can be particularly important for people who cannot easily rely on public transportation or rideshare services. Being able to drive independently can make it easier to attend medical appointments and run errands.

Practicing Driving in a Controlled Environment

The simulator is designed to recreate real-world driving situations and vehicle features. Therapists can use it to customize rehabilitation based on a patient’s individual abilities and needs.

Patients can practice skills such as coordination, motor control, strength and reaction time without the risks associated with practicing on public roads. The simulator can also allow patients to become familiar with adaptive driving equipment.

Depending on a person’s needs, adaptive equipment may include hand controls, left-foot accelerators and steering aids. Learning to use these devices can be an important part of preparing to drive after a spinal cord injury.

Driving After a Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury can affect a person’s movement, strength, coordination and ability to perform everyday activities. The extent of impairment varies depending on the location and severity of the injury.

Returning to driving is not necessarily the same for every person. Some individuals may be able to resume driving with little or no modification, while others may require extensive rehabilitation and adaptive equipment.

Before returning to the road, a person may need to demonstrate that they can safely control the vehicle, respond to traffic situations and operate any necessary adaptive equipment. A rehabilitation program can provide an opportunity to work on these skills before attempting to drive in real-world conditions.
