Potato Chips Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

A manufacturer of multiple popular brands of potato chips has recalled numerous lots due to potential salmonella contamination. Utz Quality Foods, LLC, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, issued the recall on May 4. Six types of Zapp’s potato chips and three types of Dirty potato chips were affected.

Utz issued the recall after it received information that the chips’ seasoning, made with dry milk powder, may contain salmonella. While affected seasoning batches tested negative for salmonella, Utz still proceeded with recalling limited varieties out of an abundance of caution. As of May 4, there were no reports of illnesses due to consumption of the recalled products.

However, the dry milk powder contamination affected other products, such as Mama Cozzi’s breakfast pizza. These products were recalled in April and more products are expected to be recalled as investigations continue.

Common symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Salmonellosis symptoms may begin within six hours to six days after consumption and can last as long as seven days.
