Ice Cream Recalled Due to Possible Presence of Metal

IceCream

There are so many types of ice cream flavors and toppings. Some people like chocolate and peanut butter cups. Others like candy toppings or caramel swirls. Metal? Not so much.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of certain Straus Family Creamery organic ice cream products after the company discovered they may contain metal fragments. The recall affects a limited number of production runs distributed to retailers in 17 states beginning May 4, 2026. No injuries have been reported, but the company initiated the recall out of an abundance of caution.

The recalled products include specific pint and quart containers of Vanilla Bean, Strawberry, Cookie Dough, Dutch Chocolate, and Mint Chip ice cream. Only containers with certain “best by” dates printed on the bottom of the package are affected. The potential presence of metal pieces creates a choking hazard and could cause injuries to the mouth, throat, or digestive tract if consumed.

The affected ice cream was sold in South Carolina and 16 other states. Retailers have been working with the company to remove the products from store shelves.

Affected products include:

  • Vanilla Bean (Pint) – Best By Dec. 23, 2026, and Dec. 28, 2026
  • Strawberry (Quart) – Best By Dec. 24, 2026
  • Strawberry (Pint) – Best By Dec. 25, 2026
  • Cookie Dough (Pint) – Best By Dec. 26, 2026
  • Dutch Chocolate (Quart) – Best By Dec. 27, 2026
  • Mint Chip (Pint) – Best By Dec. 30, 2026

Consumers who have any of these products in their freezer should check the best-by date on the bottom of the container and dispose of any affected ice cream immediately

Consumers who purchased the recalled ice cream should throw it away rather than consume it.

Do not return this product to the store. Straus Family Creamery is offering vouchers for replacement products through its recall program. Customers can also contact the company with any questions at support@strausmilk.com or (707) 776-2887.

Dangers of Foreign Objects in Food

Foreign objects in food can pose serious health risks, ranging from minor injuries to life-threatening medical emergencies:

  • Choking hazards. One of the most immediate dangers is choking. Hard objects such as metal fragments, plastic pieces, glass shards, bones, or stones can become lodged in a person’s airway, potentially causing suffocation.
  • Sharp foreign objects can cause cuts to the lips, tongue, gums, throat, esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Glass and metal fragments are especially dangerous because they can create deep lacerations.
  • Dental damage. Hard contaminants such as metal pieces, rocks, pits, or bone fragments can crack, chip, or break teeth. Dental injuries may require costly repairs.
  • Internal injuries. If swallowed, certain foreign objects can puncture or perforate the digestive tract. This can lead to internal bleeding, infection, or damage to organs.
