Man Dies After Hitting Deer, Multiple Trees

DeerCar

Deer may seem cute, but they can be dangerous creatures, especially when they are out in the roadway after dark.

Sadly, a deer recently caused a fatal crash in South Carolina. The incident happened on the morning of May 26 in Richland County.

A South Carolina man was killed and another person was injured after a vehicle struck a deer and crashed into several trees. The crash happened around 1 a.m. on Monticello Road near Kinsler Road in Columbia.

A Hyundai Elantra was traveling north when it hit a deer in the roadway. After the impact, the vehicle left the road and collided with multiple trees.

The driver, identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as a 23-year-old Winnsboro resident, died from injuries suffered in the crash. A passenger in the vehicle was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The person’s current condition is unknown.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Dangers of Deer on Roadways

Deer on roadways pose a serious hazard to drivers, especially during dawn, dusk, and mating season when animal activity increases. Collisions with deer can cause severe vehicle damage, injuries, and fatalities, particularly at higher speeds or on rural highways.

Some of the biggest dangers include:

  • Sudden crossings: Deer can dart into traffic with little warning, giving drivers very little time to react.
  • Multiple animals: Deer often travel in groups, so if one crosses the road, others may follow.
  • Swerving risks: Drivers who sharply swerve to avoid a deer may lose control, roll over, or collide with other vehicles, trees, guardrails, or pedestrians.
  • High-speed impacts: Striking a large deer at highway speeds can send the animal through the windshield or cause catastrophic front-end damage.
  • Nighttime visibility issues: Deer are harder to spot on dark roads, especially in wooded or rural areas.
  • Motorcycle dangers: Deer collisions are especially dangerous for motorcyclists because even a small impact can throw a rider from the bike.
  • Weather conditions: Rain, fog, and icy roads can reduce reaction time and make it harder to brake safely when deer appear.

If a deer collision seems unavoidable, experts generally recommend maintaining control of the vehicle and braking in a straight line rather than making a sudden evasive maneuver that could lead to a more serious crash.
