Woman Killed in 4-Vehicle Crash in Aiken County

CarAccCase

Multi-vehicle crashes are often deadly and sadly, that was recently the case in South Carolina.

A woman was killed in a four-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 20 in Aiken County in South Carolina. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of August 10 near the 30-mile marker.

A Honda Civic was traveling west when it collided with a Ford F-250 pickup truck. The Honda was disabled in a travel lane and was subsequently struck by a Dodge Ram pickup and a Lincoln Navigator.

A 46-year-old woman from Lexington, North Carolina, was a passenger in a Lincoln Navigator. She was ejected from the Lincoln and died at the accident scene. The Lincoln’s driver and another passenger were injured and taken to a local hospital. The driver of the Honda also was hospitalized with unknown injuries. Their current conditions are unknown.

The driver of the Dodge and the three occupants of the Ford were not injured. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities had not said whether those involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office are continuing to investigate the crash.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed in Newberry. So far in 2026, 515 people have died on South Carolina roads.

Dangers of Multi-Vehicle Accidents

Multi-vehicle accidents can be especially dangerous because they involve multiple points of impact and can quickly become difficult for drivers to escape. Some of the biggest dangers include:

  • Multiple impacts: A vehicle may be struck more than once as other cars and trucks continue moving through the crash scene, increasing the risk of serious injuries.
  • High-speed collisions: Chain-reaction crashes frequently occur on highways and interstates, where vehicles are traveling at higher speeds and have less time to react.
  • Ejection: A severe impact can cause an occupant to be thrown from a vehicle, particularly when a seat belt is not properly worn.
  • Secondary collisions: Vehicles involved in the initial crash may be hit by additional motorists who cannot stop or maneuver around the wreck.
  • Trapped occupants: Severe damage can crush or deform a vehicle, making it difficult for occupants to escape and complicating rescue efforts.
  • Greater risk of traumatic injuries: Multiple impacts can cause serious injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones and internal injuries.
  • Large vehicles can increase the danger: When passenger vehicles collide with semitrucks, buses or heavy pickup trucks, the difference in size and weight can result in devastating injuries.
  • Fire and explosions: Damaged fuel systems, leaking gasoline and electrical components can create a risk of fire following a crash.
