Many people ride bicycles, which can provide great exercise. However, a crash involving a bicycle can often sadly be be catastrophic or even deadly.
Sadly, this was the case for a Columbia, South Carolina man. He was involved in a bicycle accident in on the morning of May 10. He later died from his injuries.
The fatal accident involved a bicycle and vehicle near the Columbiana Centre shopping mall. The collision happened in the parking lot area of Columbiana Centre in the 100 block of Columbiana Circle, located in the busy Harbison shopping and dining district.
The man was riding his bicycle south through the parking lot when he collided with a vehicle traveling west on Columbiana Circle. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as a 27-year-old man from Columbia.
The driver remained at the accident scene. No additional injuries were reported. The crash remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the Columbia Police Department. The incident has been labeled an accident.
Traffic fatalities continue to be a major concern across the state. State Department of Public Safety data shows that at least 261 people had died on South Carolina roads so far in 2026. In Lexington County alone, at least 13 traffic deaths had been reported this year.
Why Bicycle Accidents Are So Dangerous
Unlike drivers inside passenger vehicles, cyclists do not have seat belts, airbags, or metal frames protecting them during a collision. Riders are often directly exposed to the pavement, nearby vehicles, and roadside objects.
Common dangers include:
- Direct impact with motor vehicles
- Ejection over handlebars
- Head injuries from falls
- Being thrown into traffic
- Poor visibility at intersections
- Distracted or impaired drivers
- Road hazards such as potholes or debris
Urban areas and busy intersections are especially dangerous for cyclists.
Bicycle accidents often lead to severe injuries because riders absorb much of the impact themselves. Common injuries include:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Concussions
- Broken bones
- Spinal cord injuries
- Facial injuries
- Road rash and severe abrasions
- Internal bleeding
- Neck and back injuries
A helmet can significantly reduce the risk of serious head trauma. While helmets cannot prevent every injury, safety experts say they can greatly improve survival rates and reduce the severity of brain injuries.
