Black Rooster Temporarily Closed After Crash

A popular restaurant in West Columbia has temporarily closed after a vehicle crashed into the building. The incident happened on the evening of March 27, causing damage and injuries.

The incident occurred at Black Rooster, a well-known dining spot located along Meeting Street, near the Gervais Street Bridge. According to restaurant officials, the business was closed to the public at the time of the crash, but staff members were still inside completing end-of-day duties.

The incident occurred when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed collided with the rear portion of the building, causing significant damage. The force of the impact pushed part of the structure inward, creating a hazardous scene inside. Two employees were evaluated at the hospital following the crash. Fortunately, they suffered minor injuries consisting of bumps, bruises, and shaken nerves.

Restaurant representatives noted that several exterior features, including a tree, a trash enclosure, and a container used for fryer oil, helped absorb part of the impact. These obstacles acted as a buffer, slowing the vehicle before it hit the building and likely preventing more serious damage or injuries.

The vehicle had been traveling at a high speed shortly before the crash. Officials later confirmed that the driver, a juvenile, has been charged with reckless driving, disregarding a traffic control device, and striking fixtures adjacent to a roadway.

The crash resulted in structural issues and a damaged gas line, both of which require repair before the restaurant can safely reopen. As a result, the location will remain closed for an undetermined period while crews assess and fix the damage.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The West Columbia Police Department said it was not involved in any pursuit tied to the accident. However, West Columbia officials said they initially received an alert of a vehicle traveling at high speed on Sunset Boulevard just 20 minutes before that vehicle struck the Black Rooster.

Despite the disruption, restaurant staff expressed relief that no one was seriously hurt. They emphasized that the situation could have been far worse if the vehicle had struck the building at a slightly different angle or if more people had been present inside.

In the meantime, the temporary closure is being viewed as an opportunity for staff to regroup, undergo training, and prepare for upcoming seasonal menu updates. Restaurant officials say they plan to reopen once repairs are complete and are optimistic about returning stronger.
